Getting Involved with HWDT
The Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust (HWDT) is a charity dedicated to the conservation of Cetaceans through education and research projects. Using our yacht ‘Silurian’ we can carry out marine research, in the form of acoustic and visual surveys, and run educational programs by visiting remote Island schools. We also have a visitors centre and gift shop on the beautiful harbour front of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.
Volunteers are vital to HWDT in carrying out all aspects of our work. HWDT provide various courses and volunteering opportunities open to all who have an interest in marine mammals.
These include:
· Participating in Cetacean Surveys on board ‘Silurian’; joining us on these surveys will give you the unique opportunity to learn fundamental and essential cetacean research techniques from our experienced team, including acoustic monitoring and photo identification
· Participating in Educational trips on board ‘Silurian’; assist the education team on board our ‘floating classroom’ and help educate the people most likely to turn to the sea for a career in the future.
· Marine Mammal Courses; 2 weekend courses are run every year providing an excellent introduction for people with no or little knowledge of marine mammals. Marine Mammal Course combines practical presentations and discussions on marine mammal biology, ecology and conservation with hands-on fieldwork experience onboard our research yacht Silurian.
· Volunteering your time to help out with the visitor centre and gift shop in Tobermory. Help out with the day-to-day running of the Trust, learn how small charities operate and help us by donating valuable time.
